A man in a suit and tie. Guest speaker Professor Michael Brandon McCormack will deliver a talk on Octavia Butler’s novel “Parable of the Sower,” which predicted the rise of Christian nationalism. Join us from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, in the A. F. Siebert Chapel.

July 20, 2024 marked the first entry in “Parable of the Sower,” a prophetic novel published in 1993. It traces Lauren Oya Olamina’s response to social chaos and political violence. The character creates a religion and spiritual community based on her lived experience and the notion “God is Change.”

This talk reflects on the prescience, wisdom, and warnings of Octavia Butler’s Parables series and considers implications for enacting change in our contemporary moment.
